GIANT ON THE BEACH (ANNIVERSARY EDITION)

The Grip Weeds
Giant On The Beach (Anniversary Edition)

Well, if all The Grip Weeds had done was managed to be both internationally-renowned and New Jersey’s best-kept secret, that would’ve been a significant feat in and of itself, wouldn’t you say? Yes, yes you would. Giant On The Beach was their fourth album, from 2004, and it’s the one that basically defines them. The Who meet The Beatles in an alley and duel to the death, spilling blood all over the hapless Oasis, who have been forced to sit in leg-irons cowering in fear, as Alex Chilton and Chris Bell keep handing the combatants fresh weapons. Yes, it’s that good. This re-release has been newly remixed- and no, they haven’t ruined it, it’s just a punchier model of the original. It also features a new full-band “loud version” of the Rubber Soul -esque “Give Me Some Of Your Ways”. And there’s a deluxe edition available at the band’s website which offers an additional CD loaded with new alternates, live recordings, and live-in-studio versions. Four Stars. –Mike Fornatale
